My personal lifelist is a list of the reptiles and amphibians that I have had both the pleasure and the luck to witness in their natural habitat. The only animals I add to my list are those that I have either personally found, alive in the field, or those that have been roadcruised by a vehicle that I was riding in. If I'm herping with somebody, and they happen to flip something that I've never seen or found before, I don't add it to my list. I simply remember it as a new experience, and use that as motivation to find it on my own.

Any animal found from the car has to be alive, as well. I won't count DOR's (Dead On Road). As much as I hate coming across DOR herps, they are a valuable tool in knowing whether or not a certain species does in fact occupy a certain area.
There are some herps that I have unfortunately either only seen DOR or have only had a visual encounter from either to far a distance to consider it a worthy addition to the list or from an encounter with a herp found by somebody else nearby.
